Is Perivolos still worth it on a Meltemi day?

Yes for a table. aegean Safran stays open every day from 10:00 to 22:30, with the same kitchen on the sand. The Meltemi is the summer northerly of the Aegean, more noticeable in high season. We do not publish a Beaufort limit or a closed beach rule. If the sea is too rough for a long swim, come for the plate. If the plan was only a sunbed on flat water, wait for a quieter window.

At a glance

  • The Meltemi is the summer northerly of the Aegean. You feel it in Perivolos, because the beach faces east, toward open water.
  • The restaurant stays open from 10:00 to 22:30. We do not publish a wind limit or a beach closure.
  • Umbrellas and sunbeds sit on the sand. A sunbed price is still not on this page.
  • If the water is rough, a table is enough. If you only want a calm sea day, wait.
  • In wind, prefer a taxi to a scooter. The parking page already says so.

What the Meltemi is, without our own gauge

The Meltemi is the seasonal northerly of the Aegean in summer. It is not a house secret. It is the same wind the Assyrtiko article calls relentless, the one that keeps the vines low in kouloura baskets. You hear it more often in July and August. That is general knowledge of this sea, not a reading we took on the sand.

Perivolos faces east, toward the open Aegean, not toward the caldera. The sunrise article already made that clear for the light. The same fact holds for the wind. This coast is not a pocket inside the crater. A Meltemi day shows and sounds. We do not claim Perivolos is more sheltered than Kamari or Perissa. We do not have that number. The same black sand continues. The wind does not stop at the village line.

We do not publish an average speed. We do not publish how many days a month it blows. We do not publish a beach flag. If a guide online writes “force 6 in Perivolos today”, that is their chart, not ours. Look at the sea when you arrive, or call +30 22860 81102 if you want to know whether a swim only trip is worth the descent.

What changes on the sand

The sand stays black and hot at midday. The beach guide already says it: water shoes or sandals, because the surface burns. Wind does not cancel the heat. It can lift fine sand across feet and the table. That is not a storm we invent. It is sand and a northerly in the same place.

Sunbeds and umbrellas sit right on the sand, with service during the day. That is already published in the beach bar article. A sunbed price is still not here. An umbrella gives shade. We do not publish that it “holds the wind”. If it blows hard, the shade stays useful and the cloth moves. You see that on the spot.

At night the candles and lounge music stay in the model we already wrote in lunch or dinner and in the romantic dinner article. We do not invent a wind speed where we put the candles out. We do not invent an indoor room we have not put on the pages. The table is on the sand, sea in front, until 22:30. If the wind makes the outdoor table uncomfortable, tell the team when you arrive. Do not ask us from here for a floor plan we have not published.

Swim, sunbed, or only a table

Three plans fit the same address, and the wind changes which one is worth the day. The first is a table only. The kitchen serves the Mediterranean menu in the published hours. Fava 11€, tomato fritters 12€, calamari 17€, grilled octopus 25€, fish fillet 35€, lobster linguine 160€ for two. You do not need a sunbed to eat. We said it in the restaurant or beach club article. It still holds on a Meltemi day.

The second is a swim. The water at Perivolos gets deep fairly fast. The family-friendly article already says that for small children. With wind the chop can be harder than on a quiet day. We do not give a wave height. Look before you go in. If you are not a confident swimmer, stay close, and stay close to the children. If the sea looks wrong, the table is still there.

The third is a full day on a sunbed. That belongs to the beach bar article. That page owns the arc, drink, swim, lunch, another swim, dinner. On a Meltemi day that arc can break at the swim. Do not copy it here as a second advert. If you only want calm water and sun without wind, the best time to visit and an early morning help, but there is no flat water guarantee. The Meltemi does not book a slot with us.

When to come, when to wait

Come if you are hungry and want a plate on the sand. Come if lunch or dinner already fits the day you have. Come if you have children and want a table with the sea in front, without building a club afternoon. The Siosios kitchen, Christos and his son Miltos, more than 30 years, does not stop because the same northerly that trains the vines is up.

Wait if the only thing you want is a long swim in flat water, and the balcony or the forecast already looks hard. Wait if you are on a cruise ship lunch with a tight window and the wind also makes the taxi from Athinios slower in practice. The cruise article already counts 25 to 30 minutes. Do not stack Meltemi and Oia on the same short call.

In July and August the wind and the crowds arrive together. Book a table before you come down, +30 22860 81102 or +30 694 426 3898. A reservation holds a place to eat, not a calm sea. If you come only for dinner, the light is still the open Aegean going dark, not the Oia sunset. Wind does not turn this beach around.

How to get here when it blows

The transport guide covers the bus from Fira, about 25 to 30 minutes, a ticket around 2.50€, and a taxi in 20 to 25 minutes. The parking page covers the public road and the large lot near the sand. In a Meltemi, a scooter or ATV is a worse idea. We already said it there: narrow roads, real wind, and a night ride back after Assyrtiko is not a plan we recommend. A taxi or a pre booked transfer is the clean close, especially for dinner.

If you drive a car, parking does not change because it blows. It only changes how long you want to stay out on the sand after the plate. If you take the bus for dinner, check the last return before you leave Fira. That holds with or without Meltemi. The wind simply makes the wait at the stop less pleasant.

The address is Perivolos, Santorini 847 03, on the sand. Hours every day from 10:00 to 22:30. To book, say how many people and lunch or dinner. Say if you also want time on the sand. Do not ask for a calm sea guarantee. Do not ask for a club package. The menu is the menu. The wind is the wind.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does aegean Safran close in the Meltemi?

Not in the published hours. Open every day from 10:00 to 22:30. We have not put a wind limit on this page.

Can I swim when it is windy?

Look at the sea when you arrive. We do not publish a wave height. If it does not look right, stay at the table.

Is Perivolos more sheltered than other beaches?

We do not publish that as a number. It faces east, toward the open Aegean. A Meltemi day shows.

Should I take a scooter if it is blowing?

Not as a first choice. The parking page prefers a taxi when the Meltemi is up, especially after wine.

Is it worth booking a table only for food?

Yes. The kitchen serves without a full sunbed day. In July and August book before you arrive.

Will I see the sunset if it is windy?

Perivolos is not Oia. It faces east. Wind does not change the direction. You get the sea and a sky going dark.

Should you book lunch or dinner at aegean Safran?

Both work. aegean Safran is a restaurant and beach bar on Perivolos Beach, open every day from 10:00 to 22:30, with the same Mediterranean kitchen at midday and at night. Lunch sits inside a beach day. Dinner is the slower table facing the sea as the light drops. Perivolos faces east, so the evening is not an Oia sunset. If you only have one meal, pick by the day you already have, not by a fake ranking.

Where do you park at Perivolos Beach?

Yes. You park on the public road behind Perivolos Beach or in the large parking area near the sand, then walk to aegean Safran on the beach. Spots are usually available even in busy summer weeks because the coastline is long. In July and August the nearest stretch to a restaurant fills first, so keep driving along the beach road instead of circling the same corner. We do not publish a parking fee, so follow the signs on the day you arrive.
